ecobyte #1: Get Educated
Knowledge is power, and the more you have, the more you can do. Get educated about the issues that concerns you most. This knowledge will act as a tool, enabling you to make a difference.
What you can do
There are a variety of highly educational and impactful web sites out there. Here is a list of some of my favourites. If there are any others you’d like to see here, please post them to this page.
- The South African Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism’s web site [www.deat.gov.za] is a great place to find out the status of current affairs in South Africa.
- Green Clippings [www.greenclippings.co.za] is a local online publication that reports accurate information about what government, companies and organisations in South Africa are doing to safeguard your future.
- Greenpeace [www.greenpeace.org] have an extremely hi-tech web site. They are the largest environmental organisation in the world, and most certainly the most proactive too. They have teams of scientists and researchers constantly assessing the state of our environment, and asking us, the public, to help.
- Al Gore’s Climate Crisis web site [www.climatecrisis.net] also has some great tips and info in their Take Action section, and of course, if you haven’t seen “An Inconvenient Truth”, it’s a must! The web site also features a fantastic carbon calculator [http://www.climatecrisis.net/takeaction/carboncalculator/] that shows you how responsible you are for carbon build-up.
