For the last 6 months Gondwana Alive has explored best practices that promote biodiversity and a regenerative, sustainable way of life.

The main commonalities between 10+ examples suggest that to take care of biodiversity and humanity, we need to cultivate a way of being in the world that is:

In essence all the best practice examples we studied were holistic in nature – designed by holistic thinkers – and could be influenced by a person’s own behaviour.
I can attest from the experience of implementing over 100 holistic projects over the last 40 years – it is possible to take one action that has positive natural, social and economic impacts … and I think from my own experience, that you can extend that to spiritual impact.
It all seemed to come down to these two words – holistic and behaviour – so I asked CHATGPT a question about the impact of being whole on the world.
A fascinating conversation unfolded that lead me to draw the conclusion that “its all up to you, and how you choose to be in the world”.
Here’s that conversation …
As a human I am a mind a body a heart and a soul. If I live as a whole, mind body heart and soul as one, what will happen to the world around me?
When a person lives with their mind, body, heart, and soul aligned, they tend to move through the world with greater clarity, integrity, and presence. Their thoughts, actions, feelings, and deeper values stop pulling in different directions. That changes not only the person, but also the atmosphere around them.
The mind brings understanding and discernment.
The body brings grounded action and participation in the real world.
The heart brings compassion, connection, and courage.
The soul brings meaning, purpose, and a sense of belonging within something larger than oneself.
When these work together rather than against each other, several things often happen around that person:
- Relationships become more authentic because people feel seen rather than managed.
- Conflict decreases because there is less inner contradiction spilling outward.
- Creativity increases because energy is no longer divided.
- Communities become steadier because aligned people tend to act with consistency and care.
- Nature is treated with more respect because separation between self and world begins to soften.
- Fear has less control, which makes room for generosity, wisdom, and long-term thinking.
A whole human being can have a quiet but profound effect. Not necessarily through power or status, but through coherence. People often respond to coherence instinctively. It creates trust. It calms confusion. It reminds others of their own possibility for wholeness.
This does not mean becoming perfect, peaceful all the time, or free from pain. Wholeness is not the absence of struggle. It is the ability to let every part of oneself participate honestly in life without fragmentation.
And when enough people live this way, the world around them slowly changes shape:
from extraction to relationship,
from noise to meaning,
from domination to stewardship,
from loneliness to belonging.
Many Indigenous knowledge systems, including those of the San peoples of southern Africa, have long understood this principle: that human wellbeing, community wellbeing, and the wellbeing of the land are inseparable. A whole person helps create a whole world.

Yes. While science does not usually use the language of “soul” in a measurable way, there is a growing body of research showing that when human cognition, emotion, physiology, meaning, and embodied awareness become more integrated, people experience greater wellbeing, healthier relationships, resilience, and more prosocial behaviour.

- act with long-term responsibility rather than short-term extraction,
- experience a stronger sense of connection with nature,
- consume more consciously,
- cooperate more effectively with others,
- protect ecosystems they feel part of rather than separate from.
In systems science terms, humans are not outside ecosystems; we are active agents within them. Changes in human consciousness, behaviour, and social values can therefore influence ecological outcomes.
